an object resists changing its state of motion with inertia. what pushes back must then be even more vigorous in order to create a uid movement. an example of the force that embodies this dynamic can be found clearly on the appropriately titled inertia, aiken�s much anticipated return to chronicle. the spanish artist has been spending years honing his craft, focusing on sharp, distinct sounds that create a pure sense of kinetic energy. the title track of the ep bolsters a erce disarray of carefully (de)constructed atonal synthwork and a rhythm section that is set to detonate. it is then followed by �axial�, a track that stays as true to modular miscalculations as it does to stripped down techno, combining both in a subliminal cessation of sanity. however aiken isn�t done there. he continues with �magnetism�, which throws a brick in the glass of conventionality with its earth-shaking layers of textured momentum. phased pads then wash over �soul drama�, bringing the entire experience to an emotionally laced denouement. after the potency of his last record on chronicle as well as his releases on imprints such as his own label timeline and the spanish powerhouse semantica, inertia marks a de nitive step forward for an already exceptionally de ned artist.

there�s not a lot to tell about the project glow in the dark by a certain harry miller. only perhaps we can state that with these eight tracks at hand harry miller accomplished probably the most enchanting album of the still quite young year. just when we wanted to dismiss the short-dated genre of chillwave wistfully, �future bliss� comes along with a bewitching sound hailing from an optimistic but cranky future. already the opening track �step one� with its vocal samples and its spoken word intro is futuristic soul full of affirmation of life pillowed on a synth bedding smoothed to the max up to its edges. but also the following seven tracks spread infectious positive vibes all around. the magic of glow in the dark�s tracks is energized mostly by miller�s delicate way of treating his various samples, a wary manner one usually only shows when picking up a guitar. and unlike sample based music feeding from hiphop his tracks are completely free from any sort of nostalgia, because all of his songs are designed for the future through and through. �future bliss� is one hell of a joy ride, from the first note to the last tone. the neon funk of �1987�, the broken beat of �7 billion = 1�, the synth pop of �the last dance� and in general, all of the eight tracks could be little, but great hymns on their own. but only in its entirety they sparkle this fathomless ingeniousness hidden in glow in the dark. in the end it seems to be wiser that one has as little background information as possible to be able to lose oneself fully in this �future bliss�.

polyop was formed in 2015 by producers jack driscoll, harry orso and visual artist and programmer alex kempton. since then they have been researching and developing a visual-audio experience that fuses nature and tribal culture with the machine. ceremony is the first exploration of that aesthetic, with their own take on acid house, they take the subject on a hypnotic journey through an alternate sonic-visual reality. kemp mutates ceremony into something between disco and techno, the kick and bassline thick and pulsing, whilst the percussion syncopates infectiously. the track progresses into a crescendo, which is amplified by the cavernous feel of the mix. this is certain to hypnotise 3am dancefloor-pagans into a state of worship.

nights get ever colder. the label owned by paris stalwart d�julz welcomes back an old friend in anonym, the man responsible for bcr006 and bcr021 returns for a four-track outing which includes a remix from orlando voorn. sultry atmospherics and masterful production are evident throughout this crisp new addition to the bass culture catalogue, another instant classic from the detroit badboy anonym.the first of the four tracks on this ep goes by the name of �castaway�, and its effortless groove will have you drifting away to a desert island the second you hear it. as a slightly obscured vocal repeats �castaway� over and over, you�re lulled into a dreamlike state. simple and highly effective, its progression is subtle and invigorating. right after that we have dutch supremo orlando voorn taking charge of the remix and pushing the track deeper into celestial territory with flashes of synth that transport you out into the cosmos. the atmosphere of the original is expertly retained, with a steady pace and cool, mellow vibes throughout. flip the record over and there are two more killer cuts. first we have �doin it to ya body�, which keeps things minimal and straight to the point. bright disco strings lie at the heart of this track, slowly weaving their way in and out of the background while the drums and rugged b-line keep your feet moving and head bopping. lastly, �wara coco� offers more hypnotic vibes drawing you with its dainty melody, dancing around the top end, while a mean bassline throbs away, deep down in the low end. it�s an strong combination and finishes off the ep in style.

brand new, rambunctious, rootsy, spiritual brass-band music from lagos, with singing, drums and home-made percussion. obadikah is a group of old friends who play together in the cherubim & seraphim and baptist churches of the ikeja and isale eko districts. a couple of them were founder-members of the eko brass band, they�ve played with pretty much all the key nigerian reggae artists. the tunes are mostly traditional yoruban melodies, often sung at bed-time. the songs are mostly original, sung in yoruba (though jomido is an egun song from the badagry area of lagos state).

lessismore (formerly lessismorecordings) was launched 10 years ago, and has been on hold for a few years. at the time the transition from vinyl to digital didn�t feel right and now that the vinyl market is coming up again the love and faith to release a beautiful product (vinyl with cool artwork) is back. this 10 year anniversary is a good reason to revive from hibernation state and to start sharing great music again. the first few releases from the relaunch will represent re-releases of the strongest ep�s from the back catalogue with remixes by respected artists.

originally from brighton, kutmah made his name while living in the us, releasing some acclaimed mix tapes and building up connections with the brainfeeder & low end theory crews. in 2010 he was deported to the uk, lived in london for 5 years and now resides in berlin (while still holding down a show on the east london-based radio station nts). in summer 2015, prolific leftfield beatmaker kutmah released the 20-track instrumental beat album blk/smr on bandcamp. during march 2016 he selected & sequenced his favorite nine tracks for a forthcoming limited-edition 10 inch vinyl version of blk/ smr on hit+run.

having made his label introduction with his remix of label newcomer villete�s �rillia-, darand land gets to spread out and show off his unique brand of euphoric and uplifting deep house on his debut ep for the label, �discover you�. the title track is classic darand land, with bright piano chords, buzzing organs and a thick chicago house bass line. siren-like pads fade in and out from the periphery, as electrifying percussion elements come into play. frank & tony take a turn and apply their signature style onto the former track, adding a chunkier kick with bright as day claps and hi-hats to propel the track through the opalescent haze draped over the melodic elements. on the flip, �marcela�s sense� is a blissed out, head down late night affair. cosmic pads swirl around glistening keys and repressed organ chords, as toms bounce among the steady hi-hat ride, lulling the listener into a state of euphoria. the ep closes out with the atmospheric, peak time detroit house cut, �souls awash-. a serpentine bass line runs the show amidst swelling pads and in-your-face kicks and percussion. as with all of his productions, the track shines in the smaller details that float in and out of focus throughout, lending the track�s weightier elements an even greater sense of gravitas.

veil of light is the synth/postpunk solo project of a mystery man from zurich known to the wider world only as m. the project was born in 2012 when all the tracks for the veil of light eponymous 2013 ep released on belaten were recorded by m in a bunker near zurich. that last fact incidentally is a good way to describe the music released under this project�s name much like the mental image of a bunker it is cold dark and forces one into a contemplative resigned state. the influences that immediately come to mind listening to veil of light are 1980�s wave music post punk industrial and dark ambient all weaved together by an overarching depressive yet dreamy atmosphere. it has been called gothgaze and the description seems apt. the followup to the opener the 7� cold skin single released on edition gris and the debut lp simply titled as well as this years head/blood/chest ep continue in the same vein.

lord of the isles, a.k.a. neil mcdonald, has spent the better part of a decade steadily producing and releasing beautiful music. the esp institute has always wholeheartedly believed in neil�s work ethic and his journey as an artist who constantly refines his vision, and when we inevitably approached in hopes of working together, we were enamoured by the sheer breadth and depth of work he had in progress�. there are two types of artists. one internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, in turn they produce immaculate yet very little art. the other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all. the art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. lord of the isles seems to be both, always in an evolving state of process where the work is constantly shed to make way for the new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry picking when and with whom he releases his art into the world. neil is simply prolific. he shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album �in waves�. the title speaks to neil�s process both intimately and from afar, it speaks to the emotional ebb and flow of the music itself, and ultimately it speaks to the listener. ahead of the album�s release, we are proud to share with you the single �weh-in�, a mesmerizing arpeggio melody that opens and closes, purrs and barks, and plays nicely with its percussive accompaniment over more than 10 minutes. this lengthy single version of the track is joined by a dark and stormy, exclusive non-album cut entitled �pik�, as well as a big room rave remix by esp institute resident ian blevins, which take us to a slightly more frantic place while retaining the euphoric essence of the original.

harvey sutherland�s latest 12� marks the inaugural release for clarity recordings, an imprint established by sutherland for modern australian records. the first new music from the melbourne producer since last year�s cuts for mcde, the double a-side priestess / bravado features his live trio bermuda at full tilt, with an ensemble of hand clapping friends. self-described �lounge room disco burners�, the record summons the groove experiments of patrick adams, bill laswell and arthur russell, while retaining harvey�s soulful tones and club-ready arrangements. priestess evolves slowly, a nine-minute mind dance that ultimately reaches a celestial state. sutherland�s piano lines bounce off drummer graeme pogson�s unwavering four-on-the-floor, while one-man string section tamil rogeon travels skyward. live standout bravado is played with determined precision, locking into a tough backbeat that only breaks once sutherland�s warbling lead solo approaches its resonant peak.

there�s a new (or old?) family of funk in town and their history is kind of a mystery. rumor has it the le�trells came close, but never were able to secure a record deal in their time. curious and unable to locate any master tapes, it took a younger generation of le trell boys to breath life back into the grooves and deliver an modern update to that which never was. on the one is sure to be a modern funk anthem certified floor filler already making the rounds in chicago, nyc, detroit and la with a moody sax filled b side that hits just as hard in the club as it does in the whip! heres to hoping the le trell boys prayers are finally answered!

fragil musique reaches the 20th release mark, and offers us a very special debut ep from a newcomer to watch. vidock lands on the label with an unusual three tracker, oscillating between intense breakbeat excursions and moody techno hybrids. -dub attack- is the main club weapon here. cycling around the drum loop, pads and samples build up to heavy tension moments, then fade away to fully unleash the force of the stripped down broken kick-bass groove. the pressure is strong and never stops rising, gradually bringing the dancer to a manic arms-shaking state, while sporadic laser synth shots and percussion hints sprinkle the track, smartly shaping its three-dimensional aspect. on the b side, dance music ufo - metamorph - is an epic journey through what feels like unexplored fringes of sample driven emotional dance music. movie-esque haunting voices and disturbing sirens set the vibe, inviting one to drift along this dark and coloured ride. fellow nantes native simo cell goes trippy on the remix, taking apart the most heady bits of the original and extending them into a deep and breaky piece.
